Straight from the West End, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has officially announced its Broadway home and premiere dates. The smash hit will open at the Lyric Theater on April 22, 2018. The cast has not yet been announced.
The story, told in two parts, is set years after the seventh and final book in Rowling’s series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; the title wizard is now a husband to Ginny Weasley, father of three Hogwarts students, and an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic. Meanwhile, his youngest son Albus struggles with the weight of the family legacy he never wanted.
Before opening, the Lyric Theatre will undergo a multi-million dollar renovation, reducing the number of seats by one-fifth in order to create a more intimate space. Additionally, the entrance will move from 42nd Street to 43rd St.
The production opened last summer in London to critical acclaim. Cursed Child received a record breaking nine Olivier awards, including Best New Play, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role. The Guardian describes the show as “spell-binding and utterly theatrical.”
