Cynthia Erivo made her star-making Broadway debut as Celie, the resilient heroine of Alice Walker’s novel (also adapted into an iconic 1985 film starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey). This powerfully scaled-down revival of the musical electrified critics and audiences alike, winning two Tony Awards (Best Actress for Erivo and Best Revival of a Musical) in the process. Don’t miss your chance to witness this amazing production, starring Erivo and Broadway legend Jennifer Holliday!
Next up at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre: Bandstand is set to open on April 26, 2017.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses:
You won’t want to miss this provocative adaptation of the novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Tony winners Janet McTeer and Liev Schreiber star as 18th Century French aristocrats who manipulate and seduce unwitting participants in their vicious games. Another West End transfer, this limited engagement at the Booth Theatre is the second revival of the play by Christopher Hampton, which was adapted into the 1988 film Dangerous Liaisons starring Glenn Close, John Malkovich, and Michelle Pfeiffer.
Next up at the Booth Theatre: Significant Other is set to open on March 2, 2017.
In the most unique production to grace the Great White Way in recent memory, The Encounter takes audiences on a multi-sensory journey from star and director Simon McBurney’s present-day London home to photojournalist Loren McIntyre’s 1969 encounter with an “uncontacted” native tribe in the Amazon rainforest, using Petru Popescu’s book about the event, Amazon Beaming, as inspiration. Since opening at the John Golden Theatre in September of 2016 (following a sold out run in London), McBurney’s solo performance has made use of innovative aural technology (seats are equipped with headphone sets) and truly avant-garde storytelling techniques to take audiences on a voyage through his story, through McIntyre’s, and through their own. The Encounter is more than a play: it’s an experience, one you’ll be thinking and talking about long after you leave the theater.
Next up at the John Golden Theatre: A Doll’s House, Part 2 is set to open on April 27, 2017.
Originally staged Off-Broadway as two one-act musicals before making its unified Broadway premiere in 1992, Falsettos tells the story of Marvin (two-time Tony winner Christian Borle in this production) as he struggles to hold together his modern “family,” comprising his son, his ex-wife, his boyfriend, his psychiatrist, and his lesbian next-door neighbors. This limited engagement opened at the Walter Kerr Theatre on October 27, 2016, and it’s been the talk of the town ever since! With a score this rich, a book this funny, and a heart this big, there’s no doubt as to why. Also, be sure to catch Christian Borle again in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory this spring!
Next up at the Walter Kerr Theatre: Amélie is set to open on April 3, 2017.
