Several Broadway productions have been announced for the 90th Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which will be held on the streets of New York City on November 24th.
The Broadways casts of Cats, Holiday Inn, Paramour, and Waitress are confirmed acts for the NBC broadcast. Additionally, the cast of NBC’s Hairspray Live! will offer a preview performance in advance of the December 7 premiere date. As with past years, the Radio City Rockettes will perform a musical number from the Radio City Christmas Spectacular.
The 90th procession will feature a star-studded cast, including Kelsea Ballerini; Tony Bennett; Aloe Blacc; Chloe x Halle; Easton Corbin; Daya; De La Soul; Diamante Eléctrico; Brett Eldredge; Fitz & the Tantrums; Christopher Jackson (Hamilton); Johnnyswim; Sandra Lee; Maddie & Tae; Sarah McLachlan; NHL legends Adam Graves and Eric Lindros; Ben Rector; Regina Spektor; the cast and Muppets of Sesame Street; Sprout’s Chica; Timeflies; U.S. Olympic Gold Medalists Michelle Carter and Laurie Hernandez; U.S. Paralympic Gold Medalists Mikey Brannigan, Gianfranco Iannotta; Grace VanderWaal; and Jacob Whitesides, among others.
It is a longstanding tradition for current Broadway shows to appear on the television broadcast of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Though the parade was first televised nationally in 1948, it was not until 1980 that a Broadway show was a featured performance. The Pirates of Penzance was the first show to perform a musical number on the telecast followed by shows such as Meet Me in St. Louis and Guys and Dolls. Interestingly, musical performances from Broadway shows would not become an annual tradition until 1992. Now, Broadway has an increased presence on the parade broadcast with as many as 5 musicals performing 3 minute selections each. In fact, the past two telecasts opened with a Broadway production number to kick off the festivities!
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will be broadcast nationally on NBC. Today’s Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, and Al Roker will host the three-hour broadcast, which begins at 9 AM ET.
