Breaking news, Broadway lovers! Next season’s revival of Ahrens and Flaherty’s Once on This Island has just announced an international casting search to find the production’s heroine, Ti Moune. There will be open call auditions in seven major cities throughout the United States and Haiti! Original Ti Moune and Broadway favorite LaChanze (If/Then, The Color Purple) made a video to announce the search! Watch the video below and then go to their website to find out how YOU can audition to star in next season’s revival.
Once on This Island is the Broadway musical celebration that sweeps us across the sea to a small village—where, in the aftermath of a great storm, a joyous new life begins.
It is the tale of Ti Moune, a fearless peasant girl who falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. When their divided cultures threaten to keep them apart, Ti Moune, guided by the island gods, sets out on a remarkable quest to reunite with the man who has captured her heart.
Bursting with Caribbean colors, rhythms and dance, the story comes to vibrant life through the score by Tony Award® winners Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens (Anastasia, Ragtime). The striking production by Tony Award-nominated director Michael Arden (Spring Awakening revival) transforms the reality of a tropical village devastated by a storm into a fantastical world alive with hope.
Come and gather around for Once on This Island—a triumph of the timeless power of theater to bring us together, move our hearts, and help us conquer life’s storms. This is why we tell the story.
The incredible voice behind smash hit “Let it Go” and the star of Frozen, Wicked, Rent, and If/Then will kick off her 2017 world tour at the Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY on Friday, April 7th. Check out the new TV spot for Amélie!
Amélie captured our hearts in the five-time Academy Award-nominated 2001 French film. Now she comes to the stage in an inventive and captivating new musical directed by Tony Award winner Pam MacKinnon (Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, Clybourne Park), with a book by three-time Tony Award nominee Craig Lucas (An American in Paris), music by Daniel Messé (Hem), lyrics by Nathan Tysen (Tuck Everlasting) and Daniel Messé, and musical staging and choreography by Sam Pinkleton (Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812).
The musical follows the mesmerizing journey of the inquisitive and charmingly shy Amélie who turns the streets of Montmartre into a world of her own imagining, while secretly orchestrating moments of joy for those around her. After discovering a mysterious photo album and meeting a handsome stranger, Amélie realizes that helping others is easier than participating in a romantic story of her own.
Broadway’s Amélie stars Hamilton’s Tony-nominated Phillipa Soo and is currently in previews at the Walter Kerr Theatre, with an official opening scheduled for April 3rd. Group tickets are now on sale through October 1st, 2017, with prices starting as low as $39.50 for groups of 12+. Let Your Broadway Genius help you book your tickets for the next Broadway hit! Broadway isn’t the only place to find captivating theatre. Off-Broadway is home to many exciting shows and has also served as a launching pad for some of Broadway’s biggest hits. Roundabout Theatre Company has two shows currently running in their Off-Broadway space, the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre, that we think you’ll enjoy:
If I Forget
In the final months before 9/11, liberal Jewish studies professor Michael Fischer has reunited with his two sisters to celebrate their father’s 75th birthday. Each deeply invested in their own version of family history, the siblings clash over everything from Michael’s controversial scholarly work to the mounting pressures of caring for an ailing parent. As destructive secrets and long-held resentments bubble to the surface, the three negotiate—with biting humor and razor-sharp insight—how much of the past they’re willing to sacrifice for a chance at a new beginning. If I Forget tells a powerful tale of a family and a culture at odds with itself.
From Steven Levenson, acclaimed writer of Dear Evan Hansen and Roundabout’s The Language of Trees, comes If I Forget, a sharply funny, unflinchingly honest new play about the stories we choose to believe, the compromises we can’t avoid and the hurt only our nearest and dearest can inflict.
In the video above, watch the cast of If I Forget, including TV’s Kate Walsh (Private Practice) and Tony nominees Larry Bryggman (Proof), Maria Dizzia (Orange is the New Black), and Jeremy Shamos (Clybourne Park).
If I Forget is playing at the Laura Pels Theatre through April 30, 2017.
On the Exhale
When a senseless act of violence changes her life forever, a liberal college professor (Tony Award® nominee Marin Ireland, reasons to be pretty) finds herself inexplicably drawn to the very weapon used to perpetrate the crime – and to the irresistible feeling of power that comes from holding life and death in her hands. Peering down the barrel of a uniquely American crisis, she begins to suspect that when it comes to gun violence, we’re all part of the problem.
Roundabout Underground presents On the Exhale, a provocative world premiere from Martin Zimmerman (Netflix’s Narcos), directed by Tony nominee Leigh Silverman (Well, Roundabout’s Violet). Staged with propulsive, heart-pounding intensity in Roundabout’s intimate Black Box Theatre, this grippingly immediate story draws you into the white-hot center of our country’s most divisive – and most urgent – debate.
In the video above, watch star Marin Ireland (Amazon’s Sneaky Pete) discuss On the Exhale.
On the Exhale is playing at Roundabout’s Black Box Theatre through April 2, 2017.
Group tickets start at $30 for If I Forget and $20 for On the Exhale for groups of 10+. To book your tickets today, call Your Broadway Genius at 877-943-2929.
Earlier this month, Newsday was taken over by School of Rock star Brandon Niederauer. The Long Island newspaper followed the 13-year-old (who has played the role of Zack since the show opened in 2015) for an entire day to see what it’s really like for a Broadway star who also happens to be a kid. Look through this fun feature and see how Brandon and his co-stars balance their homework and chores with “stickin’ it to the man” each night at the Winter Garden Theatre!
Want to take your group to see Brandon rock out on his guitar in School of Rock on Broadway? Tickets start at only $45 for groups of 15+, so call Your Broadway Genius at 877-943-2929 today for the best seats at the lowest prices.
One of the most talked-about new shows of the Broadway season, Come From Away, arrives on Broadway this spring! The breathtaking new musical is currently in previews at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre and is scheduled to open on March 12th. Come From Away tells the remarkable true story of how a small community, notable only for an international airport that was primarily used as a refueling station, came together after the events of September 11, 2001. In a heartbeat, 38 planes with 6,579 passengers were stranded in a remote town in Newfoundland. The locals opened their hearts and homes, hosting this international community of strangers–spurring unexpected camaraderie in extraordinary circumstances.
Much like the subjects of this unconventional musical, Come From Away has had quite the journey to the Great White Way, playing record-breaking engagements in San Diego, Seattle, Washington D.C., Toronto, and even Gander, Newfoundland for two special performances presented to the actual heroes whose actions inspired this incredible show.
To help student groups get the most out of this important and complex story, check out the Come From Away Study Guide. This guide is a fantastic resource on both the background of the specific events of the play, as well as the events of September 11 and the impact they had on the United States and the international community. The resource is the result of collaborative efforts between the TDF Education team, the education team at Seattle Repertory Theatre and the education team at La Jolla Playhouse as well NYC and D.C. educators. The Come From Away Study Guide is an extremely useful tool for teaching students about this difficult topic.
