We have all had experiences with an annoying audience member. Unfortunately, it’s a common occurrence. But most of these ‘bad audience members’ don’t understand how they are disrupting the experience for other audience members.
Since NO ONE wants to be the bad seed, here are five easy steps to turn you into the model audience member.
1. Turn off your phone:
Like off off… or airplane mode. And please don’t just switch your phone to vibrate and then think you’re good, we can still hear it when you get a notification.
2. Put your phone away:
Put it away! In a pocket or a bag or your shoe, just get it out of your sight because if it’s in your lap you will be tempted to check it. Also if it lights up, it will disturb everyone around you.
3. Don’t sing along:
You will be tempted, the music is amazing and I am sure that you sound great, but the audience came to see and hear the actors perform the material. So please keep quiet, and then once you get out of the theater, please sing away.
4. Please don’t talk:
Just don’t. And yes, talking through the overture does count! The overture is the time for the orchestra to show off, so enjoy it… but quietly.
5. Be a respectful snacker:
We can all agree that snacks are amazing. But please, when you are at a show, try to snack quietly. There is nothing more distracting than the crinkling of candy wrappers.
Follow these steps and you will never again be called a bad audience member!
